5 Summer Break Survival Tips

5 Summer Break Survival Tips | sunshineandholly.com

Bad-mom confession: for the past few years I have dreaded the summer. As soon as the end-of-the-school-year activities start, and the “countdown ’til summer” begins, I would start thinking about all those long summer days alone with my kids with no “mom-breaks” or me-time. I’d feel a pit in my stomach. My anxiety would skyrocket. I would frantically start pinning summer crafts and activities on Pinterest.

“What am I going to do with these kids all summer long?!?!?!”

The old saying that goes, “the days are long, but the years are short” is especially true for stay-at-home moms during the summer. Those summer days are looooooong! It’s hard to keep the kids entertained. I know all the experts say, “Let them be bored! It’s good for them!” But those experts aren’t with my kids for hours and hours at a time. I spend all summer breaking up fights, refereeing arguments, cleaning up millions of messes, and fixing snacks after snacks after snacks after snacks. Sure, naptime can be a reprieve for some moms. But my kids have never been big on naptime. And trying to get them to stay in their rooms for “quiet time” is more work for me than it’s worth.

A Peek Inside Our Home

By on February 15, 2018

This post was sponsored by UHS Window Tinting and Blinds, but all thoughts and opinions are my own.

You know when you’re driving at night, and you get a glimpse inside someone else’s home? Maybe you pass a house with blinds open and you can see inside to a dining room table, lit-up by a pretty light fixture hanging from the ceiling. Or maybe it’s a peek into a living room with comfy furniture and a throw blanket delicately draped over a chair. Maybe it’s a glimpse into a nursery, with a rocking chair in the corner next to a crib.

Whatever the scene, getting a peek inside someone else’s home always makes me feel warm in my heart. Thinking about the millions of families all over the world, snuggled up together inside their houses, living their lives, makes me smile.

Home is where the heart is. Home is family. Home is where your rump rests. Name that movie! (#disneynerd) I love our home, and I try to make it warm and inviting. Of course, these days, it’s usually trashed with kids toys. ‘Tis the season of life for that!

I’m the first to admit that I’m not great at decorating. (Or housework, but that’s another story.) I usually just buy what I like and hope it all fits together cohesively. I love lots of different styles and tend to stick to cooler colors. Lots of grays and blues! We’ve only been in this house two years, so I haven’t fully finished making each room look the way I want. I’m hoping that as the kids get older, I’ll be able to decorate more and actually finish some of the rooms.

I wanted to share a few pics with you of a couple of rooms in our home. I’d love to share a picture of every room, but most aren’t tidy enough to photograph, let alone post on the internet! (I’ll spare you the pics of the play room covered in toys and the bathroom that usually smells like toddler-pee, no matter how well I clean…) My kitchen is usually a wreck as well. As soon as I get the dishwasher filled up and started, another 10 dishes make their way into the sink. Same thing with the laundry room. With two kids, I doubt I’ll ever have all the laundry finished at once!

Anyway, enjoy this small peek inside our home!

Here’s our entry way. Since we usually come in through the garage, this space usually stays pretty clean. I love the floors and the light.

Easy Kid’s Valentine’s Day Thumbprint Craft

Easy Kid's Valentine's Day Thumbprint Craft | sunshineandholly.com

You know me – this #lazymom is always looking for quick and simple crafts to do with the kiddos. And this easy kid’s Valentine’s Day thumbprint craft was perfect to kill some time one cold and rainy afternoon. The kids loved it, it was easy to make (and clean up), and the finished product is cute enough to use as decor around the house! The most difficult part of the whole craft was getting Maddie to pose for a picture with the finished product. Girlfriend hates having her picture taken these days…

Such a cheese-ball smile!

All you’ll need is a white canvas or some cardstock, scissors, tape (double-sided would probably work better), paint, and some extra paper to use for the hearts.

Christmas Home Tour

By on December 21, 2017

Last weekend, I had some girlfriends over for our annual gift exchange. And, like I always do, I cleaned like a mad woman for HOURS before everyone arrived. (Please tell me I’m not the only one who does this!)

I figured I should take advantage of my house being so clean and take some pictures of our Christmas decor for the old blog. I didn’t decorate as much as I’ve done in the past since we’ve been so busy this year, but I’m happy with how the few things I did decorate turned out.

My mom got us this ornament the year we got married. It’s one of my favorites!

You can’t even really see all the gross stains on our white chairs in this picture. (Don’t buy white furniture if you’re ever planning on having kids.)

Solo parenting isn’t for the weak. Single parents, military parents – they’re my heroes. I have no idea how they do it. They really are super moms and super dads!

When you’re solo parenting, everything falls on you. There’s no one there to help with the chores, help with the kids, or even keep you company at night. The days I’m solo parenting are long, stressful, exhausting, anxiety-filled, lonely days. And the nights? They’re pretty miserable. Luckily, my husband doesn’t travel too much. Usually just 2-3 days every other week. I can’t imagine what it would be like if he was gone months at a time.

Since he’s started traveling, I’ve figured out a few tricks and tips that have helped me while he’s gone. So if your husband or wife is about to head out on a business trip, check out these 10 simple tips to survive solo parenting when your spouse is traveling.
