What We’re Doing to Get Ready for Virtual Learning
Here we go again! Another semester of virtual learning. We’ve got this!
I’m hoping it will go much smoother this time since everyone has had more time to prepare. But I won’t lie – the schedule the school has proposed is very overwhelming! If I wasn’t worried about my children losing their spot at our charter school, I would probably just pull them and homeschool until they can go back. I feel like virtual learning is homeschooling without all the benefits of homeschooling (like controlling the content and schedule). But it’s fine. It’s all fine. We’re going to make it work!
Here’s a list of what we’re doing to get ready for virtual learning:
-
Keep a positive attitude.
I’ve been keeping a positive attitude when I talk about virtual learning with my children. I may be overwhelmed and stressed, but they don’t need to be! I’m hoping that if I talk positively about it, they will see virtual learning as fun and exciting.
2. Prepare our space.
In the spring, we did school at our kitchen table. The chairs are super uncomfortable and my kitchen was always a wreck and covered in school supplies and paperwork. I decided that for fall, we would have school in our sunroom, which has been a playroom for the last few years. I love the idea of having a dedicated space for school. First, I cleared out all of the toys and organized all of the school supplies. Then we set up a folding table and some extra dining chairs with cushions for the kids. I’m planning on bringing my comfortable office chair into the room and setting up a “teacher space” at the built-in desk in the room. We also had to buy an air-conditioning unit for the room because it didn’t have heat or air and gets crazy hot in the summer and crazy cold in the winter.
3. Gather supplies.
This is the first year I bought all of the school supplies at the beginning of the summer and now the list has changed since we’re officially doing virtual learning. Figures, right?! I needed to purchase a few extra things, which was annoying. I also decided to borrow a Chromebook for my son from his school, instead of having him use my computer like we did in the spring. That way I can *hopefully* get some work done while he’s doing his schoolwork.
4. Teach the kids to log on by themselves.
In the spring, I had to log my kids on for each of their meetings and navigate to all of their work for them. This year, I’m going to focus on showing them how to log on and navigate to everything on their own for the first week or so. I’m hoping that by teaching them to do that part on their own, it will free up more of my time to do other things.
5. Hang a list of affirmations for us to remember during virtual learning.
I’ve seen a lot of amazing virtual learning affirmations floating around on the internet. I made one for us so we can hang it in the sunroom. Hopefully reviewing these affirmations daily will help us keep a positive attitude and make sure we focusing on the important things!
Praying for a good transition in these trying times.🙏🏻
