3 Tips for Your Kid’s First Haircut

September 20, 2017

Until Saturday, Maddie had never had a haircut. Well, except for that time she cut off a chunk of her hair when she was using kid scissors one afternoon. (Note to self – do not leave kids alone with scissors, even for a second!) But I knew her hair needed a good trim. It’s a lot like mine and starts to tangle easily when it needs a cut.

Maddie is almost 3, so she’s probably older than most kids are when they get their first haircut.  Graham got his haircut when he was one. I was just so hesitant to cut Maddie’s because I kept thinking about how those tiny curls at the bottom were her sweet little baby hairs that she’s had since she was born. Gah! Take me back please. Just for a while so I can snuggle them both.

Anyway, she did great and her hair looks super cute. If you’re ready to get your kiddo’s hair trimmed for the first time, keep reading. I’ve got 3 tips for your kid’s first haircut below.

1. Take them to a place specifically for kids.

Josh usually just takes Graham to Great Clips with him, but for Maddie’s first haircut, we decided to try out a new kid’s place near us. They had super fun cars to sit in and TVs to watch.

2. Take them with you to get your hair cut first so they can watch.

As you can tell from these pictures, Maddie was so excited! She’d been to Great Clips a few times with Josh and Graham, and has been asking to get her hair cut for a while now. So she was ready!

She even got a tiny braid. Which she immediately pulled out as soon as we got into the car. Stinker.

3. Promise them a treat.

I think it’s pretty standard at most hair places to give kids a lollipop or a sticker when they’re done. If you’re not sure the place you are going has treats,  bring along one and let your kiddo know there is a surprise in store at the end! Or let them chow down on their treat during the haircut. For Graham’s first haircut, he got two lollipops, one for each hand, and they kept him busy while he got his trim.

And of course make sure to save a lock of their hair for their baby book!

  1. I found it interesting when you said that you must consider giving your child a treat like a lollipop after their haircut. My husband and I have 3 daughters who are all under the age of 10. Since we want one to have a haircut in the most comfortable way, your tips will surely be helpful. Also, I will consider finding a blog that talks about mixed hairstyles for some inspiration.
