Our PJ Movie Night Family Tradition

March 16, 2017

PJ Movie Night is my favorite night!

Yes, I know – I know – we’re supposed to limit screen time for kids.

But honestly – my kids watch way more than the “recommended 1-hour per day of high quality screen time.” Seriously?! These AAP people must have live-in nannies and maids. Because that’s what we’ll need if I’m expected to only allow my kids to have 1-hour per day of screen time. If you do follow those recommendations – props to you, mama! Anyway…

We’re a tv-loving family. My husband and I love binge-watching shows together and my favorite evenings include PJs, a comfy blanket, a bowl of Ben and Jerry’s, and snuggling up on the couch to watch some boob tube.

So yes, we do let our kids watch tv.

And play on the iPad.

And watch movies.

Sue me.

One of our favorite family traditions that we’ve started is PJ Movie Night. We get the kids ready for bed, pop some popcorn, and pick a family-friendly movie to watch. Most of the time it’s a Disney flick, with some other feel-good family friendly movies thrown in for good measure.

“The best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear.”

The kiddos each have their own kid-sized flip open sofa – they LOVE these things! (Marshmallow Furniture – Flip Open Sofa – Mickey Mouse Club House) They’re the perfect size and shape and I personally love how the covers zip off so I can throw them into the wash every now and then. (The pink sofa has been washed many, many times already. Potty training sucks!)

Sometimes I let them eat dinner in front of the tv too. Another cardinal sin, right? Don’t judge. I’m a child of the 80’s. That’s what I did growing up.

Most of the time, I try to do some sort of themed dinner, snack, or craft for our movies nights too. I’ll share some of these ideas in future posts.

How much tv do you let your kids watch? Do you have family movies nights?

  1. This is great! It’s real and honest. Mine watch way too much too. It depends on the day and what I need to juggle. I’d love to limit it more and reality is it will as they get older and there’s more things they’re involved in. Love how you make realistic blog posts but your themed foods with movie night are amazing! Beyond me lol.
