5 Tips for Touring the Jack Daniel’s Distillery

May 12, 2017

If you’re a whiskey fan, you’ve got to take a trip to Lynchburg, Tennessee to visit the Jack Daniel’s Distillery.  Touring the distillery has always been on my husband’s bucket list, so on our way up to Nashville we had to stop by. The tour was super informative, and the whiskey tasting at the end was lots of fun!

Here are 5 tips for touring the Jack Daniels Distillery.

1. Make sure to factor in some time on your trip to explore Lynchburg.

Surprisingly, Lynchburg is a dry county! So you won’t find any bars or honky-tonks. But still, it’s the cutest little town, so make sure to factor in some time to explore! Stroll around the town center, do a little shopping, and eat some amazing barbecue.

2. Check out the distillery’s website ahead of time to choose which tour you’d like to take.

There are 5 different tours at the Jack Daniel’s distillery. There’s even a “Dry County Tour” for teetotalers. Ha! Josh wanted to do the Angel’s Share Tour so we could taste  some of the Single Barrel Collection and the limited edition whiskeys.

3. Wear decent shoes for the tour.

You’ll be doing a lot of walking and climbing stairs. And get ready to learn some history! We loved learning about the distillery process and all about Mr. Jack.

We got the insider’s information from our tour guide about how Jack Daniels died. It’s said that Jack wasn’t a morning person. (Guess he’d rather stay up late drinking whiskey?) One morning, he needed to grab some paperwork out of his safe, but he was having having trouble remembering the combination. He got so frustrated that he kicked the safe and broke one of his toes! An infection set in and he ended up loosing his foot. Later, his entire left leg had to be amputated. He died in 1911 after the infection continued to spread. The tour guide said the moral of the story is “never go into work early.” I think the moral is “don’t kick things in anger.”

Trivia fact – Jack was only 5 feet 2 inches tall!

4. Make sure to bring your camera!

The grounds of the distillery are picturesque, so make sure to bring your camera. And there are tons of great places to take Instagram-worthy pics! This was my favorite picture we took during our visit – Jack on the rocks! Get it?

5. But note that there are some places on the tour where you won’t be able to take pictures.

Like in the grain mill. Guess Jack has to keep some things secret!

Fun trivia fact – Whisky (plural whiskies) means it was made in either Scotland, Wales, Canada or Japan. Whiskey (plural whiskeys) means that it was made in either Ireland or America.

We had a blast on the tour, and I actually liked a couple of the whiskeys we tasted! (I’m not a huge fan of whiskey.) So if you’re around the Nashville area, take a quick trip over to the Jack Daniel’s Distillery for a tour!

Have you been to any other distillery tours? Which ones should we add to our bucket list?
